If there is anything that clearly defines social media, it’s noise.
We are consumed by it, inundated with ads and posts from all directions demanding our attention. It’s easy to feel like you’re not being heard – that your voice is being drowned out by the hundreds of other voices in the ocean of the internet. Noise!
So, how can you stand out and get your message ringing loud and clear above all that noise? Truthfully, there is no surefire method. But there are a few steps you can take that could amplify your voice.
Now, amplifying your voice doesn’t mean just shout louder. That will never work, and it certainly won’t cut through the roar. Why? Because there will always be somebody who will simply yell louder. And that’s an engagement you don’t want to bother with.
Instead, you want to work simple and smart within your own power to improve.
Read on for three “do” tips I have found to be most effective.
1. Do keep your platforms up to date.
If you could build a brick-and-mortar store, you probably wouldn’t build it on a dead-end street with no traffic, right? You would probably want it to be in a location that had a lot of traffic because it would increase the number of people who would see your store.
The same theory goes for social media apps.
Facebook is still the leader in both usage and popularity. But did you know that Twitter (once up at the top with Facebook) has now fallen behind Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and Reddit?
If you are not on the platforms that people are using the most, there is no way your voice will be heard. It’s like screaming into an empty room.
Social media can be fickle, and some apps may come and go (R.I.P Vine, Google Plus, and Yik Yak). But keeping up with which ones are popular or have the most MAUs (Monthly Active Users) and MUVs (Monthly Unique Visitors) is vital to getting your voice heard.
Now, that doesn’t mean that you should go out and establish accounts on every single one of them. Do some research and find the ones that have similar content to yours. Figure out who would follow you, and then find where they are already gathering.
Target the ones that will help magnify you!
2. Do unify your message
Once you are on the right platforms, you want to be sure that your message is consistent across all of them.
Brand Name
It should be reflected and easily found whether it’s on Pinterest or TikTok. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same for all. Sometimes, the platforms only allow a certain number of characters.
Therefore, it’s important to have at least a part of your brand name that is easily recognizable so that it can be found in whatever form the platform allows.
Content
This could be one of the most important things you can address to cut through the noise. Your content should clearly reflect who you are and what you want people to know, and that has to track across whatever platforms you’re on.
For example, it would be difficult for people to take you seriously if you discussed the evils of sugar on Facebook but had a Pinterest board of your favorite desserts.
However, if you were honest about how difficult it was to give up sugar and your Pinterest board was filled with sugar-free, tasty desserts, your message remains clear and consistent.
It even shows how you adapted and overcame a stumbling block, which makes you more relatable.
3. Do engage your audience.
This one seems like a no-brainer, right? Nobody wants to be “talked at,” they want to be “talked with.” Remember, you’re not the only one who wants to be heard.
This goes beyond responding to comments and thanking people for supporting you. A lot of times, people follow a person because they feel some kind of affinity to the message or the personality.
What better way to engage your followers than by allowing them to be a part of your message?
I know, that sounds a little bit snobby. But think about it.
You’re considering a restaurant for a special dinner, so you go to Yelp where you see that the restaurant has some bad reviews. But you have no way of knowing the people who have left those reviews. They could have been having a bad day or they could be difficult people in general.
On the other hand, one of your friends went and had a great time. The food was excellent, the service was great, and they can’t wait to go back.
Whose review are you going to give more consideration to? Probably the friend, right?
Now apply that to your content.
You may produce a lot of great stuff but consider using follower content every so often. Think about how someone might be excited that you used their picture or story. They show their friends. Their friends start to follow you as well.
Do you see how that could allow your voice to be heard?
So, there you have my three top tips. Keep your platforms current, your message unified (including brand and content), and engage your audience on a personal level using their content along with your own.
It may not guarantee you’re heard loudest all of the time, but work steadily and you can rise above the cloud of noise so that you don’t have to shout at all.
