What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Yoga, Pilates, and Barre?
Workout Mats and Ponytails?
Leggings and Water Bottles?
People Moving Around To Soothing Music?
Technically, Yes… But It’s so much more than that.
Yoga, Pilates, and Barre help…
✓ Muscle Growth
✓ Flexibility
✓ Balance
✓ Posture
✓ Endurance
✓ Physical Wellness
✓ Mental Wellness
Plus — these are low impact workouts with minimal equipment necessary. No need to stress about trying something new! There are options from beginner to advanced for any kind of fitness level.
Yoga
I’m going to start out by saying — there is such a thing as baby goat yoga. I hope that motivates you as much as it motivates me.
But let’s back up — What exactly is yoga?
According to NIH — “Yoga is an ancient and complex practice, rooted in Indian philosophy. It began as a spiritual practice but has become popular as a way of promoting physical and mental well-being. Yoga typically emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana).”
A Few Of The Many Types Yoga Include…
- Vinyasa
- Hatha
- Restorative
- Iyengar
- Ashtanga
You may have heard of some of these — or maybe you have no idea what different types of Yoga methods are. All types of Yoga focus on different parts of the body. Some are more physical than others, while some are more focused on mindfulness.
Want to be able to touch your toes?
Want to find a moment of calm in your day?
Want to improve stamina?
Yoga has plenty of options to choose from that can fill these needs.
Pilates
Pilates? I thought you said Pie and Lattes!
Don’t worry — Pilates is actually really fun and really rewarding. You won’t miss the pie and lattes. In fact, you’ll be glad you skipped them with how darn good you’ll feel after this workout.
Similar to Yoga, but not the same…
What’s the difference between Yoga and Pilates? Let me tell you — It’s all about the core.
Pilates concentrates on building strength with concentration on the centralized part of the body. Like Yoga, it focuses on…
➜ Posture
➜ Balance
➜ Flexibility
But the movement requires challenging your center as opposed to the holding and flowing movements of Yoga. All of this is done with a mind-to-body connection.
Pilates has been known to be a good form of rehabilitation to relieve pain and recover from injuries. Bonus points for that!
Barre
Ready to raise the Barre when it comes to your workouts?
According to Today — “Barre weaves together elements of dance, pilates, and yoga into one workout, so it’s not only great for improving posture and flexibility, but also strengthening your entire body.”
Woah, woah, woah! That sounds hard!
No need to worry — Like Yoga and Pilates, Barre is suited to all fitness levels. This workout is all about utilizing body weight to target different muscle groups for strength, flexibility, and endurance.
Barre fancies dance… without putting the pressure on to know anything about dance. It’s the perfect low-impact blend of yoga and pilates with a dash of challenge for your muscles. It’s also another great option for recovering from injury.
Breaking It Down
You really can’t go wrong with Yoga, Pilates, or Barre. It’s all in what you are looking to target and improve upon for total wellness.
Tip: Don’t try to jump right in. Take it slow and start with beginner classes. No one likes a torn muscle on the first day.
Remember — Yoga is as much for mental wellbeing as it is for physical. Pilates will challenge your core and improve strength. Barre combines these practices for a whole body workout.
Try them out! See what works best for you.
