Did you know?
There are around 1.4 BILLION people on Instagram. And Instagram is among the 5 most visited sites in the world according to Blogging Wizard.
So many people to reach! But also so much competition.
How do people do it? How do you get hundreds or even thousands of people interested in your material with all of the content floating around online?
That’s like one sunflower in a field of sunflowers trying to attract as many bees as possible.
Well stand tall my friend! Be the biggest darn flower in that field!
The Big 5
How do you get yourself out of the dead zone with Instagram and start getting those happy little double clicks?
It starts with the Big 5:
- Know Your Audience
- Research Your Competitors
- Use Tested, Solid Content
- Be Uniquely You
- Call to Action
Now, you’re probably thinking — well these are kind of obvious…
But have you really gone in deep to understand why these things are so important to put into action?
It’s like this — if someone put you in charge of running a restaurant kitchen, you’d have a very general idea of what to do, right? But until you assigned everyone to a role and laid out a plan, you wouldn’t fully understand how to properly serve your guests.
Start With Your Audience
You want to share something, right? It can be a service, a product, an idea… Custom Knitted Sweaters anyone?
No matter what it is — you have to know your audience. Let me say that again. You have to know your audience!
- Who?
- What?
- Where?
- Why?
Who are you aiming your idea at?
What’s their general demographic?
Where’s your audience generally located?
Why would they be interested in what you’re offering?
Those are some very solid general questions to consider.
Do A Little Digging
I think years of school have taught us to never cheat. Same goes for the business world. You never want to steal ideas.
But it’s alright to keep an eye on competitors. Any big brand will do that. Like Nike — I’m sure they have their eye on Adidas. I mean, they don’t have a guy outside with binoculars, but you get the idea.
You have to keep up with what’s trending in different industries.
Content and Branding
Yawn!
That is something you don’t want to happen. People are fast scrollers. You have to put out quality, smart/honest/funny/informative content — or else you’ll be left in the dust.
Don’t be afraid to build a brand! People will be quick to recognize you if you have a solid brand image in place. Get creative with colors/logos/shapes… whatever you can do to provide a little uniformity when it comes to your content.
Also — Test and test again! Look at metrics. This will help you better understand what works and what doesn’t.
Get Them Involved
WebFX talks about anticipation, expectation, and reward when it comes to the psychology of putting in a call to action.
Have you ever gone to an arcade that gives out tickets when you win? And you get to go to the counter to get your free key chain and rubber bouncy ball?
That’s basically what a call to action does. It gets people interested and involved with a sense of purpose behind it. Having a call to action will increase your chances of people being active on your page.

So get out there and put words into practice.
